How to Freshen Your Breath with a Healthy Apple

    Last updated 1 year ago

When you’re at work or school, having forgotten to bring your toothbrush to freshen up after lunch, consider eating an apple. The crunchiness of an apple can help fight areas of discoloration on your teeth and improve your breath.

Learn more about the benefits of eating apples for your oral health by watching this video. This expert explains two other key benefits of apples, and reminds viewers that chewing an apple should not replace a normal, twice-daily brushing routine.

Why Should You Consider Cosmetic Treatments to Enhance Your Pearly Whites?

    Last updated 1 year ago

Cosmetic dentistry is becoming increasingly popular thanks to new techniques, advanced technology, and a wide range of available services. More people are realizing the value of beautiful, straight pearly whites when seeking a job, looking for romance, or simply enjoying day-to-day activities. If you’re less than thrilled with the appearance of your smile, consider cosmetic dentistry services such as dental implants, veneers, or Invisalign orthodontics. In addition to improving your appearance and enhancing your self-confidence, cosmetic dentistry carries the following benefits:

    Function Restoration
While cosmetic dentistry is best known for improving one’s appearance, it can also play a critical role in restoring the proper function of one’s teeth. If you’re missing teeth, you could have difficulty chewing foods and articulating certain words. Also, missing teeth can gradually encourage the deterioration of the underlying jawbone structure. By working with a cosmetic dentist to receive dental implants, you can enjoy full function of your pearly whites.

    Oral Care Improvement
Some cosmetic dentistry techniques can make it easier for you to maintain your oral health. If there are certain places in your mouth that are difficult to clean due to improper alignment, for example, talk to a dentist about Invisalign orthodontics. Invisalign straightens your teeth with a series of nearly invisible plastic trays.

    Range of Services
One of the many benefits of cosmetic dentistry is that there are so many options available. Whether you would like to fix chipped, cracked, misaligned, or discolored teeth, there is a technique that can help. Cosmetic dentistry services, such as dental veneers, can even correct gaps between the teeth. Consult your cosmetic dentist to find out which treatment is right for your needs.

At Northern Virginia Dental Associates, we’ll work with you to customize a treatment plan that suits your unique needs. For a beautiful smile, schedule your appointment today by calling (703) 451-8332. Our Springfield practice offers dental implants, teeth whitening, Invisalign, and much more.

    What Are Veneers Made Of?

    Last updated 1 year ago

Dental veneers are thin shells made from porcelain. They fit over the fronts of your teeth to create a more appealing and even smile. Porcelain is widely used in dentistry because of its aesthetics, strength, and versatility. This tough material is shaped to create lifelike teeth that can withstand the daily pressures exerted by biting and chewing. With the right care, your porcelain veneers will last for years to come. Porcelain can also be colored to perfectly match your existing teeth or even provide you with a whiter, brighter smile. It is resistant to staining and offers long-lasting cosmetic correction when you choose to receive veneers.

Northern Virginia Dental Associates are here to help you achieve a smile you’re ready to show off to the world. We offer dental veneers in addition to a wide range of other cosmetic and restorative services in Springfield, VA. Understanding the Process of Tooth Whitening

    Last updated 1 year ago

Tooth whitening is a popular cosmetic treatment that enhances the look of your smile. Whiter teeth look healthier and can even take years off your appearance. During your in-office whitening procedure, all you’ll need to do is sit back, relax, and let your treatment work.

    How the Treatment Works
Tooth enamel is porous, meaning that over time, stains can sink below the surface and become locked inside, causing your teeth to appear darker or yellowed. Tooth whitening treatments break up these stains within your teeth, allowing them to appear whiter. Whitening is performed using either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. These chemicals are able to easily and quickly penetrate your tooth enamel and get to the stains inside. Once they have reached the stains, these chemicals begin a reaction that breaks up the stain molecules, causing them to disappear.

    What the Treatment Entails
Tooth whitening can be achieved during a single one-hour visit to your cosmetic dentist. During your visit, your dentist will first take steps to protect your gums and lips with a barrier or protective gel. Next, he will apply the whitening treatment directly to your teeth and a light may be shined on your teeth to activate the gel. The gel will be left on your teeth for 15 minutes, then cleaned off and reapplied. After three total applications, your treatment will be complete and your teeth will look up to eight shades whiter. All teeth bleach differently, so your results will depend on the types of stains on your teeth. Your cosmetic dentist will go over maintenance tips such as using whitening toothpaste and avoiding certain foods and drinks to keep your new, sparkling smile looking its best. No whitening treatment is permanent, however, and touch-up treatments will eventually be needed.

Understanding the Truth Behind Tooth Whitening Myths

    Last updated 1 year ago

Over time, your teeth accumulate stains that affect the look of your smile. In order to get the best results from your tooth whitening treatment, it’s important to get the facts behind bleaching.

This video dispels common myths about whitening. You will learn that not all teeth whiten the same. Bleaching once won’t keep your teeth white for life, so you’ll need to use over-the-counter products or schedule future dental visits to keep your smile bright. Maintaining your look with a whitening toothpaste is a safe way to keep teeth looking their best.
